چکیده

We prove the existence of a global bifurcation branch of 2π-periodic, smooth, traveling-wave solutions of the Whitham equation. It is shown that any subset of solutions in the global branch contains a sequence which converges uniformly to some solution of Hölder class C, α < 1 2 . Bifurcation formulas are given, as well as some properties along the global bifurcation branch. In addition, a spectral scheme for computing approximations to those waves is put forward, and several numerical results along the global bifurcation branch are presented, including the presence of a turning point and a ‘highest’, cusped wave. Both analytic and numerical results are compared to traveling-wave solutions of the KdV equation.

A numerical study of the Whitham equation as a model for steady surface water waves

The object of this article is the comparison of numerical solutions of the so-called Whitham equation describing wave motion at the surface of a perfect fluid to numerical approximations of solutions of the full Euler free-surface water-wave problem. The Whitham equation ηt + 3 2 c0 h0 ηηx +Kh0∗ ηx = 0 was proposed by Whitham [33] as an alternative to the KdV equation for the description of sur...

Solitons, peakons and periodic cusp wave solutions for the Fornberg-Whitham equation

In this paper, we employ the bifurcation method of dynamical systems to investigate the exact travelling wave solutions for the Fornberg-Whitham equation ut − uxxt + ux+uux = uuxxx+3uxuxx. The implicit expression for solitons is given. The explicit expressions for peakons and periodic cusp wave solutions are also obtained. Further, we show that the limits of soliton solutions and periodic cusp ...

Bifurcation diagram of a one-parameter family of dispersive waves

The Korteweg de Vries (KdV) equation with small dispersion is a model for the formation and propagation of dispersive shock waves in one dimension. Dispersive shock waves in KdV are characterized by the appearance of zones of rapid modulated oscillations in the solution of the Cauchy problem with smooth initial data. The modulation in time and space of the amplitudes, the frequencies and the wa...

Bifurcation diagram of a one-parameter family of one-dimensional nonlinear dispersive waves

The KdV equation with small dispersion is a model for the formation and propagation of dispersive shock waves. Dispersive shock waves are characterized by the appearance of modulated oscillations nearby the breaking point. The modulation in time and space of the amplitude, the frequencies and the wave-numbers of these oscillations is described by the g-phase Whitham equations. We study the init...
